Rudolph Ackerman (1764-1834) was born in Germany into a family of limited financial means; Ackerman became a saddler and coach builder like his father. He plied his trade in numerous cities in Germany, France, and England and in 1795 established a print shop and drawing school. In 1809, he began his Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions, and Politics, known as Ackerman's Repository of Arts. Fashion plates served as a fashion guide for dressmakers because they communicated the latest in contemporary fashion. Approximately 450 fashion plates were released and the magazine ended in 1829.
